Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary in Maharashtra, India, is a hidden gem that offers an immersive safari experience, showcasing its diverse mammal population in a serene and picturesque setting. Nestled in the eastern part of the state, Nagzira’s dense forests, rolling hills, and sparkling lakes create an ideal habitat for a variety of wildlife. Embark on early morning and late afternoon jeep safaris to explore the sanctuary’s rich biodiversity. The sanctuary is home to a healthy population of Bengal Tigers, and though spotting these elusive predators requires patience and luck, the thrill of potentially encountering one in the wild is unparalleled. Leopards, often seen slinking through the underbrush or resting in the branches of trees, add to the excitement of the safari.

Nagzira’s lush landscape is also inhabited by Indian Gaur (Bison), which roam the grasslands and forests in impressive herds. Herds of Chital (spotted deer) and Sambar Deer are commonly sighted grazing in open meadows, while the smaller Muntjac, or Barking Deer, can be glimpsed darting through the forest.

Keep an eye out for Sloth Bears foraging for insects and fruits, as well as Wild Boars and Indian Jackals. The sanctuary is also home to packs of Indian Wild Dogs (Dholes), which are known for their exceptional hunting skills.

Smaller mammals such as Jungle Cats, Civets, and the occasional Porcupine add to the sanctuary’s rich tapestry of wildlife.

HAPPY HATHI TIP

Do not miss the lip smacking street food of Nagpur: it’s clean, fresh and unique in flavors. Our favorites: Misal Pav, Batata Vada, Tarre Pohe and the delicious sweet ‘Santra Barfi’ derived from Nagpur’s famous orange harvest.
